Sugar Land is about 20 miles southwest of downtown Houston, in eastern Fort Bend County. It began as a sugarcane field in the mid-nineteenth century and was incorporated in 1959. Sugar Land is a full-service municipality that provides high-quality, affordable services to its residents. Master-planned communities and inviting neighborhoods boost property values that foster a sense of community. Sugar Land has excellent schools, libraries, civic organizations and other resources; making it a wonderful place to work, live and raise a family.

Sugar Land has certainly found its strength in sugarcane production by this point. Once settlers began to establish and farm plantations; sugar became the city's primary industry. A sugarcane refinery founded in
1896 was purchased and rebranded as Imperial Sugar in 1908. The company contributes to the development of the town, as well as modernizing the sugar refinery business and constructing houses for the employees and their families. Sugar cane production ceased in 1928. Nonetheless, the economic foothold it provided Sugar Land helped increase the population of the town from less than 2,000 to 117,869 today.

Sugar Land has received numerous awards, including high marks for safety (12th safest), city planning, cultural diversity and even recognition as one of the country's 100 Best Places to Live in the United States by CNN/MONEY magazine. Our mayors, airports, planned communities, parks, schools and police departments have all been recognized for their achievements.
